GetDeb downtime and new server coming up

Hello GetDeb users,

as you all have surely noticed, the sites GetDeb.net, PlayDeb.net as well as the repository itself cannot be reached reliably for the last few days.
This is because on our current server the bandwidth provider has problems with packet loss and does not yet know how to fix this.
Because of that there is little we can do to resolve the issue.

Fortunately, the GetDeb and PlayDeb projects are supported recurrently with an amount of 200€ per month. And this only by one incredibly amazing benefactor whom we cannot thank enough for this.

So we decided to use the donation to take the server to a new home with hopefully a more reliable bandwidth provider.

Because of this expect a few more downtime the next days while we move things to the new provider.

Sorry for the inconveniences.

Have a nice week !

GetDeb and PlayDeb subscriptions via PayPal

Hello,

since now you can sponsor GetDeb and PlayDeb by subscribing to it via PayPal.
You can freely choose the amount you want to spend per month.
This will allow you to get your name, a link and a logo to be shown on the sponsors page and the front page of both getdeb.net and playdeb.net .
We are hoping that GetDeb and PlayDeb will finance themselves someday and are targeting for 200€ per month so we can pay the servers and to upgrade the amount of bandwith for the servers.
You can still make one time donations with paypal but won't get listed on the sponsors site this way.
So instead of donating 10€ once I would set up a subscription about 5€ and cancel it after two months ;)

We hope that our hope will come true and thank every sponsor in advance for supporting us.

You guys are awesome ;)

Thanks

GetDeb repository for Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy salamander) published

Half a year has passed again. It is time for some new Ubuntu release.
And with Ubuntu 13.10 released in a few days I do not disappoint you
to announce that the GetDeb repository for the new version is now
published. There are only some little problems with URD and Ubuntu-Tweak.
Everything should be fine and running.
So much fun everyone with the new Ubuntu and GetDeb for the next half year.

Per policy, when the new Ubuntu version is out the Ubuntu versions maintained
by GetDeb will be 12.04 and 13.10 because 12.04 is the latest LTS release
and 13.10 will be the latest release. Ubuntu 13.04 won't be maintained
since then.

Nice weekend.

Ad placement announcement

Due to the growth of GetDeb and PlayDeb we want to make sure we can fund it properly.
Therefore we want to try out unintrusive ads and welcome feedback on the ad network we trial.
After two weeks of testing we will decide whether we want to keep it.

The ad will be placed on the start page of GetDeb and PlayDeb in the next days and you are welcome to give feedback about it.

Repository for Ubuntu 13.04 published

Finally after some delay because of my final exam I took the time to finish the work on the repository for Ubuntu 13.04.

Well, and there it is.

Per policy always the latest release and the latest LTS release are supported with updates on GetDeb.net and PlayDeb.net. So all coming updates are going to be published for Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) and Ubuntu 13.04 (latest).

So have fun.

Personally, I only have 13.04 on my notebook installed and just can't get used to the new nautilus. How could they just remove the "F3" feature?

GetDeb gets a CDN

Due to the increasing visitors of our sites (both GetDeb.net and PlayDeb.net) and the bandwidth they consumed there was some downtime or slowness the past days. So we decided to make use of a CDN (CloudFlare in this case) to cache the static contents of the sites (mainly screenshots) and so help to decrease the traffic to our main server or another static content server.

This has been set up in the past days and is working well now. You may have got a page from CloudFlare telling that the site is not cached yet. But meanwhile all DNS changing and most of caching has been done which resulted in a great speed up when loading the sites.

Please let us know if you encounter difficulties and thanks for using our services ;)

Sites GetDeb.net, PlayDeb.net and repository up again

Fortunately, we did have an up-to-date backup of the old server at the end. The last days I was busy to get everything set up. The sites are up again and you should be able to browse the packages (none should be lost) as well as to use the repository as usual. If you have problems be sure that "dig screenshots.getdeb.net" outputs "208.113.160.150".
At the moment I am thinking of doing an online survey for Ubuntu 13.04. You can then vote which packages you like and do not want to miss on GetDeb/PlayDeb. This way unpopular packages can be left out of the repository for Ubuntu 13.04. Currently there are 130 source packages in GetDeb and 170 source packages in PlayDeb which is just too much.
For the most popular packages I am also planning to get them intergrated in the official Ubuntu repositories directly. Or even better to get them integrated in Debian and let Ubuntu just sync them.
So far, you should be able to use GetDeb and PlayDeb as usual. Let me think about the future…
